An air valve pulse, also known as an idle air control (IAC) valve, is a crucial component of a car's engine management system. It regulates the amount of air that enters the engine when the throttle plate is closed, which is necessary to maintain a stable idle speed. Without an air valve pulse, the engine would stall when the throttle plate is closed, causing drivability issues and potential safety hazards.

The air valve pulse works by opening and closing a small valve that allows air to bypass the throttle plate. When the engine control module (ECM) detects that the throttle plate is closed, it sends a signal to the IAC valve to open, allowing more air to enter the engine. This maintains the correct air-to-fuel ratio and prevents the engine from stalling. As soon as the throttle is opened again, the ECM sends a signal to the IAC valve to close, bringing the idle speed back to normal.
