Genuine BOSCH Contact Set
Part number GD501

The ignition distributor contact point in a car is a crucial component of the ignition system. Its main function is to control the timing of the electrical spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber of the engine. The contact point sits inside the distributor and consists of a set of metal contacts that open and close as the distributor shaft rotates.

When the engine is running, the distributor shaft spins, causing the contact points to separate and then come into contact. As the points separate, a high voltage current is induced across the ignition coil. When the points make contact, the current is transferred to the distributor cap and then to each spark plug, resulting in the generation of a spark for the combustion process. The contact point's opening and closing is precisely timed by the engine's camshaft, ensuring that the spark occurs at the right moment for efficient combustion and engine performance.
