A crank angle sensor, also known as a crankshaft position sensor, is a critical component in a car's engine management system. It is responsible for monitoring the rotational speed and position of the crankshaft. This sensor helps the engine control unit (ECU) determine the precise timing of fuel injection and ignition spark. By tracking the crankshaft's position at any given moment, the crank angle sensor enables the ECU to optimize the engine's performance, fuel efficiency, and emission levels.

Typically located near the crankshaft, the crank angle sensor utilizes magnetic or optical technology to detect the position and speed of the engine's rotating shaft. It consists of a sensor, a toothed wheel on the crankshaft, and wiring that connects it to the ECU. As the crankshaft rotates, the teeth on the wheel pass by the sensor, generating electrical impulses. These impulses are then converted into voltage signals and sent to the ECU, which uses them to calculate the crankshaft's position and speed accurately. With this information, the ECU can adjust the engine's timing, ensuring optimal performance and smooth operation.
